This digital activity will allow your students to practice identifying the meanings of common idioms.
This resource includes a "game board" with fourteen idioms. The idioms' definitions are written on cards, and the cards always appear in the same order on the board. Each definition is covered with a movable square.
A large card is displayed on the left side of each slide that contains an idiom and a fun illustration that shows the literal meaning of the idiom. However, students must determine the TRUE meaning of the idiom. They begin moving the cover cards until the correct definition is revealed.
This game can be played independently or against a partner. Directions are included for both versions of the game.
- 2-player version: Player A plays on the red slides and Player B plays on the blue slides. After completing each slide, the player types the number of cards he/she uncovered in the answer box. (Students quickly learn that they should pay attention and try to remember where various cards are located.) At the end of the game, each player adds up the numbers on their slides. The person with the lowest sum wins!
- 1-player version: The student plays on each slide. When he/she has completed all sixteen slides, he/she calculates his/her total sum. The player uses the total to determine if he/she won a gold medal, a silver medal, a bronze medal, or no medal.
