No wedding would be complete without the wedding cake. The wedding cake actually began during the Roman Empire as bread, which was broken over the head of the bride. This act was representative of a life full of happiness, prosperity, and success. After the bread broke and fell to the ground, the guests would all scramble to pick up the crumbs, saving them as special tokens of the wedding to bring them good luck.

The wedding cake evolved over time, becoming flour-based sweet bread. Created in the form of small buns, they were stacked into piles and placed in front of the newly married couple. Then, the bride and groom would do their best to kiss over the top of the pile and if successful, it was believed they would have a happy and successful marriage with lots of little children.

Then in the early part of the 19th Century, the ìwedding cakeî was actually a pie that was filled with sweat breads or it might be a mutton or mincemeat pie. Regardless, inside the pie was a glass ring. History tells us that whichever woman found the ring in her piece of pie would be the next one to marry. Obviously, the wedding cake as we know it today has changed dramatically. Even so, the wedding cake still represents an important part of the wedding.

Multi-flavored cake

Instead of choosing a single flavor for your wedding cake, why not choose a three or four tiered cake with each tier being a unique flavor. For example, you could have one layer be pineapple cream, another layer devilís food, a third tier cherry cheesecake, and the fourth tier caramel apple!
