Hiring the photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make for your wedding. Think of the wedding photographs as this ñ your wedding will happen just once. That means there is just one opportunity for the photographer to get everything right. After all, once the processional, ceremony, introduction, kiss, recessional, and first dance are over, they are over. For this reason, it is crucial that you hire a professional that will capture both candid and posed shots of your wedding.

You want your wedding photographs to be as perfect as possible. These photos should be something you can go back to look at and envision being there at your wedding day all over again. The photos are the one thing that will last from your special day. Your cake will be eaten, the wine drank, the flowers will wilt, the band will pack up and the music will stop but the wedding photographs will go on and on.

By having excellent photographs, you can share them with family and friends and create a beautiful album so that one day, your own children can enjoy seeing how mommy and daddy were married. Although the cost of good photographs is steep, they are worth it. In fact, many couples on a budget will choose to cut back somewhere else so they do not have to skimp on the photographer. Again, these are your permanent record of your wedding day so always go with the best.

See if the photographer has an assistant to take candids

When you start interviewing different photographers to take your photos, ask if they have a qualified assistant photographer that will be there at the wedding as well. This way, while the primary photographer is taking the posed shots you would typically see in a photo album, the assistant could be going around, capturing the priceless moments that might otherwise be missed.

Hire a photo journalist

In our wedding, we didn't get a regular photographer. Instead we hired a professioal photographer who was primarily a photo journalist. There were a few major differences. First, his primary focus was candid shots. We were not very interested in the posed shots (though we did several). Instead, we got some incredible photographs that look like they belong in a magazine!

Also, he didn't put together proofs for us to select several for an album. Instead, he developed all of the film (like 500 pictures), got 4x6 prints of each and gave them all to us. Now, we have all of the negatives and I'll be putting together some special albums for our parents.
